Analysis of a multi-fluid plasma model for the near-cathode region in thermal plasmas

Abstract

A frequently cited multi-fluid plasma model for the near-cathode region in thermal plasmas is investigated by a combination of analytical and graphical methods. The results presented in the literature are reproduced and confirmed for plasmas where charge exchange collisions occur more frequently than ionization collisions. For plasmas where ionization collisions are dominant, slightly different results including a different interpretation are presented. From this interpretation, possible amendments to the model are suggested. Also, conclusions about the limitations of the model are drawn.
