The students have acquired basic physiological knowledge and are familiar with a number of medical technology procedures that are directly related to this. Their interest in working at the medical/technical interface has increased.


The lecture deals with the physiological basics of important functional/organ systems involved in message processing and regulation in the body. When selecting the course subjects, care was also taken to ensure that mainly those subsystems of the body are treated which are frequently affected by diseases and whose diagnosis / therapy strongly depend on medical technology.

Lecture contents are:

  • Fundamentals of neuronal information guidance and processing: Bioelectrical processes at nerve cell membranes (equilibrium, rest and action potential), basic building blocks of neuronal information processing (synaptic activation/inhibition, spatial and temporal summation, lateral inhibition, etc.).
  • The sensory system (somatovisceral sensitivity): Basic knowledge of different sensor types, the transformation of measured values (transduction and transformation) to action potentials and further processing of these signals.
  • The motor system: physiology of the muscle, neuronal control, spinal and supraspinal sensorimotor functions.
  • Structure and function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS): sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, medulla oblongata, hypothalamus, neuro-humoral interface.
  • The cardiovascular system: structure, cardiac mechanics, electrical excitation processes at the heart, circulatory system, regulatory processes, measurement of circulatory parameters.
  • Respiration: structure, respiratory mechanics, alveolar ventilation, gas exchange, respiratory regulation, spirometry and measurement procedures with indicator gases.
  • Presentation of the essential biopotentials: ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG. Examples of evoked potentials.
