goals

The students get to know methods in research-related teaching and are able to study a closely defined topic on their own based on a scientific paper. The students learn to understand technical literature on a specific topic and obtain insights into current research topics. The students can practice to write scientific texts and the summary of complex subject areas. The students learn more about the peer-review process and scientific work in general. Furthermore, the talk enables students to learn to present scientific results and deepen the subject.

content

Every semester, we offer a Bachelor seminar on "Current Topics in Computer Security", the focus areas are software security, network security, privacy, reverse engineering and similar topics in systems security. The students are expected to study a closely defined topic on their own. Furthermore, they should write a text that summarizes their findings and prepare a talk on this topic. The text should be 15-20 pages long, while the talk should be about 20 minutes long, combined with a discussion of about 5 minutes.

The process of the seminar is similar to a scientific conference. Beyond writing a scientific summary of a specific topic, the students also get to know the peer-review process: an important aspect of the seminar is constructive feedback regarding the report written by other students, for example by providing suggestions on how the presentation can be improved. The students should then also use such feedback to improve their own text.

There is an online meeting in the first week of the semester during which we present more details regarding the dates and topics of the seminar. As part of this meeting, we will also discuss the topics and formal requirements of the seminar (especially related to the format similar to a scientific conference).

In the summer term 2021, the first meeting will be online and we will distribute all relevant information via e-mail. Please contact your advisor once a topic has been assigned to you. Note that the seminar will be offered in the form of a conference seminar.
