The participants have gained insight into the current state of the art of passive and active electronic devices and acquire an understanding of the basic principles of electronics. They have achieved a profound knowledge of the physical operation of the devices, their description by equivalent models in reasonable approaches, and their application in basic circuits.
Electronic devices represent the fundamental building blocks in electronics, from these devices functionalities are realized by means of electronic circuits. The design of these circuits requires a sound knowledge about the mode of device operation, which is the base for succeeding in circuit simulation. The course "Electronic Devices" develops a fundamental comprehension of the physical processes in passive and active electronic devices. Starting from the basic properties of electronic materials, in particular of semiconductors, we deal with the geometry of the devices, their operation and characteristics, desired and parasitic effects, the application in circuits as well as their limits, and we discuss the theoretical description by appropriate equivalent circuit models. According to the importance of passive devices we treat resistors including varistors and thermistors, capacitors, and inductors. The active devices comprise pn diodes including Zener diodes, bipolar transistors, MOS capacitors, and MOS field effect transistors.
