The students have learned the fundamentals of optical information transfer and retrieval. The have acquired basic knowledge of lasers, linear and non-linear optics and understand the concepts of optical memories (CD, DVD) and optical telecommunication.

The lecture starts with the fundamentals of linear optics (refraction, diffraction, dispersion etc.). Afterwards, the interaction of light and matter is analyzed and the fundamentals of lasers are worked out. Important laser systems are discussed and principles of the generation of short light pulses are explained. Furthermore, the principles and applications of non-linear optics are discussed. As the most important photonic application, optical memories and optical telecommunications are discussed in separate chapters. The lecture is concluded with an outlook on the potential of photonic crystals.

Important information

Dear students,

as you have recognised, in this summer semester, we have to offer our courses online due to the Corona crisis. The course Photonics will be offered via Moodle. Please enroll in the course „PTT/ LAP Courses summer term 2020“ (Password: 20LAP_Courses20) and register for the course Photonics. We will enroll you in this course and provide you with the required password. Further instructions on the course are given within this restricted course area. We do our best to provide you with the best teaching offers we can deliver under these circumstances.

Best regards and good success with our course,

Ali Alloush, Nils Surkamp and Martin Hofmann
