The students have learned the fundamentals of optical information transfer and retrieval. The have acquired basic knowledge of lasers, linear and non-linear optics and understand the concepts of optical memories (CD, DVD) and optical telecommunication.

content

The lecture starts with the fundamentals of linear optics (refraction, diffraction, dispersion etc.). Afterwards, the interaction of light and matter is analyzed and the fundamentals of lasers are worked out. Important laser systems are discussed and principles of the generation of short light pulses are explained. Furthermore, the principles and applications of non-linear optics are discussed. As the most important photonic application, optical memories and optical telecommunications are discussed in separate chapters. The lecture is concluded with an outlook on the potential of photonic crystals.

Format of this course: The course consists of lecture and exercises. The whole content will be offered via moodle and Zoom videoconferences. The exam is an oral exam. We will announce the exam procedure and dates as soon as the university has determined the rules for exams under the current situation.

Lecture: The materail for the lecture will be offered as an online scriptum with explaining audio files via moodle. It is expected that you prepare parts of the material on a weekly basis as announced. In the interactive session during the regular lecture time Wednesday 10:15-11:45 we will discuss the material and your questions in a Zoom video conference. The link for this conference will be distributed via moodle.

Exercises: We provide you with additional material and specific tasks in the exercises. For your questions and discussions, we will open a moodle forum. Interactive video meetings will be made during the exercises time slot (Thursdays 14:15-15:45) upon special announcement.
