This lecture focuses on important aspects on VLSI design that have to be considered in developing complex microelectronic systems and their implementation into real integrated circuits. Students will gain detailed knowledge about the topics addressed in the content of the lecture.

content

Complex electronic systems in communication techniques, computer techniques, automatic control techniques and many more are usually realized as highly integrated microelectronic systems on silicon chips. These systems can be purely digital or a combination of digital and analogue components. This lecture gives an overview of important elements in designing highly integrated systems called VLSI design (Very Large Scale Integration). After an introduction to current development trends in VLSI systems, the lecture will focus on the changes in transistor behavior due to technology scaling. Because a high integration level can be achieved only if special care is taken on eliminating power loss within each abstraction level of the IC design, we will place emphasis on this topic. This is followed by an investigation of selected sub-systems that play central roles, e.g. clock generation and distribution, complex arithmetic blocks (adders and multipliers), etc.
