goals

The aim of the course is to independently learn the structured analysis of English-language scientific publications and to apply them to an example from current research. In the simulation-based validation of the results, the understanding of theoretical contexts is to be deepened, an active examination of scientific standards and methods encouraged and their application practiced on the basis of the given example. Formal, written and analytical skills should be further developed. The change of perspective in the review process (peer review) is intended to deepen the knowledge of methods and, indirectly, to strengthen the capacity for self-criticism. In addition, one of the general goals is to promote student autonomy. The stipulation of fixed deadlines is intended to create the need for efficient work organization and to achieve a better integration of the course into the individual study plan by completely avoiding fixed attendance dates.

The course Methodology of scientific publishing - Learning the procedure by validation and assessment of recent research results is divided into three progressive stages: In the first stage each student receives learning material for self-study as well as one English-language scientific publication, which is then independently analyzed. The publication is thematically limited to the following topic areas: Energy system technology, electric mobility, decentralized power systems and control engineering. To validate the research results, appropriate models will be developed using MATLAB/Simulink and simulations will be carried out. The results will be elaborated in the form of a German-language scientific publication. During the second stage the students assess three pseudonymized elaborations of other students in a double-blind review process and in accordance to a prescribed scheme, a so-called peer-review. During the third and last stage the students have the opportunity to revise their elaboration on the basis of the three assessments.
